Painting in Snow

When I arrive at Montage Deer Valley I'll be starting the first of a seasonal series of paintings.  I have always wanted to paint two things, the aspens and the snow.  And now I get to! The aspens have always intrigued me. I think it’s because the ever changing color of the leaves pop against the white bark.  And snow provides an amazing challenge of painting white on white. I’ll hike through the area surrounding the resort and set up my easel.  Hopefully it won’t be snowing too heavily and it won’t be too cold.  It’s been a very long while since I dealt with the cold snow in Ohio. As I spoke to Linda yesterday, my contact at Montage, she was standing on her balcony looking out to a stand of aspens.  I could hear her drinking in the colors of the moment as she described the “Aspen Glow.” This may answer the question, “Do you only paint vineyards?”  The Deer Valley series is one of two significant commissions scheduled for 2011 that are not related to vineyards.  The other private commission is a series of the Russian River. As an artist my inspiration is the colors inspired by natural light, colors that are divined in a moment.  I smear time with color.  And I can’t wait to smear more color in Deer Valley this month.
